Two Deaths, 56 Severe Bleeding Adduced To Fake Weed in Illinois

Synthetic cannabinoid- also known as ‘fake weed’ have been adduced to 56 cases of severe bleeding; also reported to be responsible for the death of two persons across the city of Chicago and in parts of Central Illinois.

Hospitalization associated with coughing, urinary blood, bloody nose, and other dangerous health-related symptoms was required in all the cases. The cases (nine of them) were tested positive for rat poison called brodifacoum- one of the world’s most widely used pesticides. This statement was made by the Illinois Department of Public Health on Monday.

State officials have been working tirelessly to figure out any possibly common synthetic cannabinoid products related to the cases so as to discover where those products sprang from.

Many questions about illnesses are still on air since it is unknown to officials as to exactly what caused the contamination of this drug. However, investigators and toxicologists are also working so well to provide absolute evaluation.

Melaney Arnold, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Public Health said on Monday: “This is the first time we’ve seen an outbreak of this magnitude in this area. We’re working with numerous partners across the city and state as we investigate this outbreak.”

Concerning this outbreak Dr. Nirav Shah, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health also said: “We continue to see the number of cases increase. The department is persistently working with local health departments and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, along with other partners to try to identify these products.” He went further to say: “Without more information, IDPH does not know how much contaminated product is circulating or where. We strongly urge everyone not to use synthetic cannabinoids.”

What are synthetic cannabinoids? Synthetic cannabinoids, or fake weed, are chemicals manufactured by humans which can be strewn on dried plant materials and smoked.

These chemicals are believed to be psychoactive because they are analogous to the chemicals found in marijuana- another psychoactive drug from the cannabis plant intended for medical use but which has turned out to be one of the most abused drugs in human history.

When synthetic cannabinoids were examined, one study published in 2016 in the New England Journal of Medicine found that it was as powerful as THC, the psychoactive chemical found in marijuana.

People who smoke synthetic cannabinoids are prone to rapid heart rate, vomiting, confusion, kidney failure, as well as hallucination.

Do not forget the advice given by Dr. Shah, “we strongly urge everyone ‘not’ to use synthetic cannabinoids”.
