Dr Enabulele Osahon, Vice-President of the Commonwealth Medical Association, has expressed his displeasure at the recent trip embarked upon by President Buhari, for an Ear, Nose and Throat (E.N.T) infection.
He opined that is was a national embarrassment that the President sought medical attention overseas in spite of the fact that Nigeria has within her borders, 250 certified E.N.T medical professionals and as well as a National Ear Centre, situated in Kaduna State.
Dr Osahon also stated that the President’s actions were a tacit endorsement of the undesirable state of Nigeria’s Medicare delivery system, since top Government officials did not repose any confidence in it.
He noted that because of the unsavory conditions of service in the health sector in the country, Nigeria medical professionals practice abroad, with as many as 5,000 Nigerian doctors plying their trade in the UK alone.
He also highlighted the humongous funds that are channeled towards financing such medical excursions, stating that Nigeria’s political class spent close to 1billionUSD of tax payer’s funds on such trips, in 2013 alone.
According to him, President Buhari has also failed to demonstrate the change mantra that swept him into power, by not seeking treatment here in Nigeria.
Unconfirmed reports have it that this latest trip of President Buhari will deplete the national coffers by a staggering 3 million pounds, with costs such as aviation fuel, accommodation allowances for the President and his entourage, medical bills as well as feeding allowances topping the list of expenses.
